    Lovin’ The Mule

I am reminded why being a California resident is so desirable now that the dreary, damp days of winter have been replaced by the mild temperatures of spring . Vibrant green grass and patches of poppies cloak the rolling hills. Our beaches are wide open and belong to the locals while they are still too chilly for water sport seeking tourists. In the distance stand our snow capped mountains that reflect the peachy-pink sunsets and velvet blue night skies. It simply is beautiful countryside. My family and I have begun spending much of our weekends outside since all this beauty is just outside our door.. We have delighted in impromptu picnics in meadows beside Ortega Highway and day trips to Big Bear to partake in snowball fights. There have been full and fatiguing days spent peddling our beach cruisers back and forth on the boardwalk between the Huntington, Newport and Balboa Piers, followed by evening marshmallow roasts at the fire pits on the beach. Yes, life is good. We pack an collection of stuff for each of these little journeys. No trip is complete without lip balm, munchies, sodas, water bottles, frisbees, a playing cards, blankets and beach towels. My most favorite of all these little provisions is the Ice Mule. acquired] our Mule at a hunting/fishing outlet (which is funny because he would never harm a fly). Thinking it was something we could use one day, he brought it home. He was right. We rarely leave home without this beverage cooler, our refreshments and drinks stay cold for hours and hours.. A short time ago I discovered that the Ice Mule had been left in the car overnight. Then I recalled that we had packed deviled eggs for our trip the day before. I anticipated being consumed with nasty fumes as I extracted the eggs from their Tupperware grave. To my surprise the eggs and the water bottles inside the soft cooler were still nice and cold, even though they had been in the bag for over 24 hours! Now I take the Ice Mule with me when I do grocery shopping. I transfer the frozen items into my cooler bag and continue my errands around town before returning home. Quite simply, I adore this thing! Soon the grassy green countryside will turn golden brown and the seaside will become a jam-packed, noisy mecca for the tourist traffic. Tourists will be searching for parking spots nearest to the beach (hint, these don’t exist in the summer) and traffic on Pacific Coast Highway will be reduced to a slow crawl. When we do feel brave enough battle the crowds, you can bet that our Mule will be with us to keep our beverages, snacks, sun tan lotion and temperaments cool. Yes, it will soon be time to sit by the pool with our soda pop, ice tea and lemonade as the temperature climbs past 90 degrees. Allthough the kitchen will be only be a few feet away I intend to use the Ice Mule poolside. In fact I might not move from my lounge chair all summer long.
